TOP INTERNATIONAL FASHION BRANDS FOUNDED BY ARMENIAN WOMEN

INDEX BRIEF

YEREVAN, August 2026 - Karine Arabian is the Armenian woman who has built the most internationally established brand from scratch, according to a new index by the monthly magazine Life in Armenia. The study compares ten eligible brands across six evidence-based measures: commercial reach beyond the home market, institutional recognition, years operating, named international runway appearances, independently documented clientele and international press.

Karine Arabian ranks first on the strength of a brand history dating to 2000, a deep record of international fashion coverage and independently documented celebrity wear. ARAKS, the New York-based lingerie and ready-to-wear label founded by Ara Yeramyan, places second. Kivera Naynomis ranks third, narrowly ahead of Alex and Ani, while Dubai-based Kaiane Designs completes the top five on documented international runway, press and institutional recognition.

The largest brand any Armenian woman has built does not appear. SKIMS, valued at approximately $5 billion in 2025, was launched by Kim Kardashian, already one of the most recognized names in the world. The index measures brands built without that advantage.

TOP 5 RANKED FASHION BRANDS

TOP 5 RANKED FASHION BRANDS

1 | Karine Arabian - Paris, France

  • EST. 2000
  • FOOTWEAR & ACCESSORIES
  • SCORE 52.0

Karine Arabian built her eponymous footwear and accessories label in Paris after earlier design work with major European houses. The brand's long international record, substantial fashion-press visibility and documented celebrity wear, including Madonna and other internationally known performers and actors, give it the strongest combined profile in the eligible field.

The index treats Arabian's earlier Chanel relationship as professional experience rather than clientele for her own label.

2 | Araks - New York, United States

  • EST. 2000
  • LINGERIE & READY-TO-WEAR
  • SCORE 42.0

Founded by Armenian-American designer Ara Yeramyan, Araks developed from a New York lingerie label into an internationally stocked fashion house known for refined color, intimate apparel and ready-to-wear. Its longevity, established retail presence and sustained editorial visibility produce the second-highest score in the study.

3 | Kivera Naynomis - United States

  • EST. 2005
  • INTERNATIONAL FASHION LABEL
  • SCORE 40.6

Kivera Naynomis places third through a combination of international commercial representation, fashion-industry visibility and an established design record. Its score is close to Alex and Ani's, making this one of the least separated positions in the ranking; the research workbook therefore marks the brand's evidence of confidence separately from its numerical score.

4 | Alex and Ani - Rhode Island, United States

  • EST. 2004
  • JEWELLERY
  • SCORE 40.2

Carolyn Rafaelian transformed a Rhode Island manufacturing base into one of the most commercially successful brands in the field. Alex and Ani grew from jewellery manufacturing into a national retail name with extensive department-store and freestanding-store distribution and brought Rafaelian major business recognition.

The index distinguishes that historical scale from the narrower question of currently verifiable international-market access at the study cutoff.

5 | Kaiane Designs — Dubai, United Arab Emirates

  • EST. 2018
  • LUXURY WOMENSWEAR
  • SCORE 34.8

Founded by Armenian-born engineer-turned-designer Kayane Mahrejian, Kaiane Designs has built an international profile from Dubai through luxury womenswear, named fashion-week appearances, editorial coverage and sustainability-related institutional activity.

Public evidence supports runway participation and documented celebrity/editorial wear, so those factors are scored positively. The baseline ranking counts only commercial markets that could be independently substantiated under the study's market-access rule; the accompanying sensitivity analysis shows how the ranking changes if additional markets are verified

MATHEW ZEIN, CHIEF EDITOR of LIFE IN ARMENIA

“The easy version of this story is a list with a billionaire at the top. We deliberately did not write it. The point of this index is to find out who built a fashion business that travelled through stores, runways, institutions, clients and press without beginning with celebrity as the product.”

NOTES TO EDITORS

Mathew Zein is the founder and chief editor of Life in Armenia, an Armenia-focused publication. The full dataset, scoring model, evidence log and sensitivity analysis are published for independent review.

The index ranks ten eligible fashion, accessories, jewellery and beauty brands founded by Armenian women in Armenia and across the diaspora. Eligibility requires a documented Armenian woman founder who was not already an established public figure at launch. Under the strict founder rule used for this edition, mixed-gender co-founded brands are not ranked.

Metrics and weights: international commercial markets 20%, institutional recognition 20%, years operating 15%, named international runway presence 15%, independently documented notable clientele 15%, and international press 15%. Fixed scoring anchors are used so that a change to one brand does not automatically change every other brand's score.

Commercial-market access requires evidence of a meaningful route to customers in a country, such as a retailer, stockist, distributor, wholesale relationship or established direct commercial operation. Press coverage, a fashion-week appearance, worldwide website shipping or participation in an international project does not by itself establish a commercial market.

Runway credit requires an identifiable event and year. Clientele is counted only where third-party evidence connects the person to the brand. International press distinguishes independent editorial evidence from brand-authored claims and promotional syndication.

Where a qualifying criterion cannot be publicly evidenced, the brand receives no points for that criterion rather than receiving an assumed value. Evidence confidence is recorded separately so readers can distinguish a numerical score from the strength of the underlying public record.

The sensitivity analysis tests plausible changes in uncertain inputs. In particular, Kaiane Designs' baseline score uses only substantiated commercial markets. If nine separate commercial markets are verified under the same rule applied to every brand, its score and ranking would rise materially; that scenario is not treated as the baseline until the evidence is verified.

The index measures the defined evidence-based variables only. It is not a valuation, revenue ranking, assessment of design quality, artistic merit, brand prestige or the personal wealth of a founder.

Figures are compiled from public company information, institutional records, retailer records and named third-party publications available through August 2026. Brand circumstances change, and readers should verify current commercial information before relying on it.

EDITORIAL DISCLOSURE

Brands may be contacted during fact-checking and may provide corrections or supporting documents. Company-supplied material does not receive automatic scoring credit: claims that affect the published ranking are assessed under the same evidentiary rule as every other entry.

Where confidential commercial evidence is considered in a future edition, that treatment must be disclosed and the same opportunity must be available to all ranked brands. No ranking position should be purchased, sponsored or altered in exchange for commercial consideration.
